  1. I think someone I love may suffer from bi-polar depression. Do tests like 23andme give any real info on this? Nothing she has taken for depression over the past 7 months has worked and she is getting worse. I’m not living in her area and I can’t go with her to the doctor. I’m wondering if I could pay for a test for her that she could take to a doctor? I’m guessing none are that conclusive?

Just discovered your blog. Interesting reading. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with others.

    • My opinion is that tests that you can do at home like 23andMe currently do not provide useful information for treatment. I would suggest she (or you) talk to her psychiatrist about the meds. Sometimes it can take more than 7 months to find the right meds or combo of meds. There are genetic tests that psychiatrists can prescribe that may help determine the right med or right dosage- you could ask about that. If her doctor is not willing to order a genetic test, it doesn’t hurt to get a second opinion.
Hope that’s some useful info. Feel free to email me at cthompson@geneticdiscoverysf.com if you have other questions. Thanks and best wishes to you and your loved one.
